Seven (7) players from the ScotiaBank/Pepsi School Football
Academy were included in the Guyana Female U17 squad that participated in the just
concluded Female U17 World Cup qualifying games just hosted by Guyana.
Guyana won the group and therefore will be one of the four
qualifying teams for the second round to be held later this year. The four
teams will play against each other, with the top three advancing to the
CONCACAF Women’s U17 finals in December.
The players from the ScotiaBank/Pepsi program are Jenell Brown, Tasnica Lovell, Althea
Holligan, Anaida Walker, Shonette Gasper, Keisha Gordon and Natiffa Marville.
The ScotiaBank/Pepsi School Football Academy was a program
initiated by the Guyana Sports Development Foundation, Inc, a non-profit
organization based in the USA whose objective is to assist sports of Guyana.
The program, a pilot for schools in the Georgetown area was
co-sponsored by ScotiaBank and Demerara Distilleries limited under the Pepsi
Brand. The fact that this program which was implemented with limited resources
and extended over a four month period, could produce such talented players,
speaks wonders of the potential for women’s football development in Guyana.
