Excitement galore as Beach Soccer returns to Linden
Marlon Benjamin
Approximately two months subsequent to the inaugural beach soccer competition in Linden, football buffs were treated to another exciting encounter when the Upper Demerara Football Association (UDFA), in conjunction with the Guyana Football Federation and Garth Nelson of the USA, hosted a similar event at the Bayrock Ground, Wismar Linden Monday last.

Intermittent early morning showers delayed the proceedings but eventually subsided, just around 14:30hrs to allow the players to get into action. Seven teams competed for honours in six exciting games.

Silver Shattas won the finals against All Stars 4-3. Marlon Benjamin scored a double in the 7th and 20th minutes and received support from Nigel Price in the 14th and 16th minutes.

Tony Adams netted for All Stars in the 9th, while Randy Bastianie and Rodrick Richards netted in the 12th and 24th minutes, respectively.

For their efforts, Silver Shattas received a trophy donated by 20/20 Sports Bar. Jason Cobena of Silver Shattas was adjudged ‘Best Goalkeeper and collected the Richard Cheap Corner trophy.

The prize for the most prolific goal scorer was shared between two players from Silver Shattas - Nigel Price and Marlon Benjamin. They both scored eight goals apiece.

Stanford Bovell of All Stars received a trophy donated by Aubrey ‘Shanghai’ Major for the player that netted the Best Goal.

The player of the final was Nigel Price of Silver Shattas. He received a trophy donated by Ron Wilson of Blackie Barber Shop, while Marlon Benjamin was adjudged Player of the tournament and was awarded a trophy donated by Jevon and Dennis Massive Stores, Hotel and Rental.

In the first semi-finals, All Stars triumphed over Milerock 5- 4 in extra time, after regulation time ended in a 4-4 stalemate and in the second game, Silver Shattas out gunned Winners Connection 8-5 on the back of a Nigel Price’s goal spree. He netted in the 8th, 14th, 21st and 23rd minutes, while Marlon Benjamin emulated his feat in the 9th, 11th and 15th. Jessie Waldron polished off the onslaught with a 13th minute success.

President of the Upper Demerara Football Association, Mr. Bryan Joseph thanked all those who witnessed the Competition, singling out the players and officials of the Guyana Football Federation.

Another Competition is slated for next month at the same venue.
