The Guyana Football Federation has appointed Lawrence “Sparrow’ Griffith as Manager of the Senior National Team “The Golden Jaguars”. The team is expected to leave Guyana for Suriname on Monday 1st June 2009 for the Bi Annual Parbo Bier Cup 2009. The other teams participating are Antigua, French Guiana and the Host.
Lawrence Griffith takes over from former Manager Raul Adams who managed the team during its glory years. Griffith brings to the table a wealth of experience. He was first appointed as Manager of The Senior National Team in 2002 in Trinidad and Curacao and Assistant Manager in 2005 in Barbados. He was also the Manager of the National Futsal Teams in 2004 in Trinidad & Tobago and Costa Rico and 2008 in Trinidad & Tobago. He also managed the National U15 and U16 teams in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 in Trinidad & Tobago. He had a stint as Manager with Alpha United in French Guiana and Manager of the Inter Guyana Games Team which participated in Suriname in 2008.
Griffith a former FIFA International Assistant Referee and now a FIFA Trained Referee Instructor and Assessor is heading a new look Management Team, with Paul James as Head Coach, Billal Nantambu as Assistant Coach and Gavin Brown as Goalkeeper/Assistant Coach. Cuban Trained, Mr Lindley Langhorne will be the Physiotherapist. Mr Howard Lowe has been named as Captain.
Guyana will first come up against Antigua at the Andra Kampervene Stadium on Wed 3rd June at 19:00 hrs (Sur Time) and Suriname will oppose French Guiana at 21:00 hrs. On Fri 5th June Guyana will come up against Suriname at 21:00 hrs with Antigua and F/Guiana battling 2 hours earlier. On Sunday Guyana will tackle French Guiana at 17:00 hrs and in the final Game Suriname will oppose Antigua at 19:00 hrs.
Meanwhile the team has intensified preparation with sessions conducted at the Carifesta Sports Complex, Thomas Lands twice daily. A few changes to the team were done over the past days. Goalkeeper Ronson Williams of Alpha United and defender Randy Small of Linden have been drafted in, whilst Glenorvan Edmonds of Santos and Adrian Adams of Berbice opted out due to school. Berbician Kurt Bristol withdrew due to him having an injury. Dwight Peters was sent home after he turned up to Camp on Tue 26th May 09. The players were all informed via letter from the GFF that the Camp would have been commencing on Fri 22nd May 09, but he only turned up on Tue 26th May 09, reported to no one but got dressed to go to the training venue. His excuse was that he did not know and he did open the letter, on hearing this, the Coaching staff immediately dismissed him from the Camp. At present twenty four (24) player are encamped and training with the final twenty (20) to be selected on Saturday 30th May 09.
