| The Guyana Football Federation World Cup Committee (GFF/WCC) in conjunction with the Guyana Sports Development Foundation (GSDF) on Sunday last hosted successful trials for North American based players to represent Guyana in upcoming trails for the World Under-20 youth championships.
The trials, which took place in Florida, attracted players from the USDA and Canada.
Those attending were Kashif De Jonge, Jelani De Jonge and Aaron Wong-Yu of Canada, Khalil Lam (Virginia), Justin Adamo, Aaron Sookhoo, Benjamin Sookhoo, Anthony Forde, Kahleel Forde and Brian Rodrigues all of Florida.
Before the trials got underway, the players were addressed by Colin Baker and John C. Yates of the GFF/WCC who briefed them on what the trials hoped to achieve and the responsibilities expected of each player once selected.
Richard Rodrigues a USSF qualified Coach then took the players through warm-ups and tested their skills, after which a stimulated Game was played over three 30-minute periods against a Coral Springs Youth team which included two national US Youth Soccer players.
At the conclusion the Coach from the Coral Springs said that he was impressed with the performance of Anthony Forde, the Sookhoo twins, and Justin Adamo, whose father is Italian and his mother is a Ketwaroo from Guyana.
He also made special mention of 14-year-old Brian Rodrigues who performed with players at least 5 years older than him.
The afternoon which ended at 19:00hrs was like a family affair as all the parents, except those of Aaron Wong-Yu were present.
They were advised that the GFF/WCC will send a report and video tape of the game to the GFF and the Technical Director Jamaal Shabazz, who would then decide which players, would be invited for camp in preparation for the qualifying games in Grenada next month.
Committee Chairman Yates pointed out that is has become very important now for Corporate Guyana and the Government to come forward and financially support this campaign which would see Guyana’s Golden Arrowhead flying high around the world, while at the same time bringing Guyanese of all walks of life closer together as was seen at the trials in Florida.
