Guyana’s hunt for medals will be led by ‘Big’ John Edwards, Randolph Morgan, Mervin ‘Spongy’ Moses, with association president Peter Green accompanying them.
Reigning Caribbean Powerlifting champ in the 82.5kg class Randolph Morgan continues to make his presence felt on the International scene when he became the first Guyanese to capture an overall class at the Pan American level on Friday afternoon in Miami, Florida.

Morgan, who is also the reigning senior overall national champion, battered the opposition to win gold ahead of a Mexican (silver) and Puerto Rican (bronze) at the 12th Annual Pan American Powerlifting Championships.

His achievement betters the achievement of fellow Guyanese Winston Stoby who had won gold in the deadlift some 12 years ago.

At the said competition, Mervin ‘Spongy’ Moses competing in the 75kg division won silver behind an Ecuadorian who took the gold and a Brazilian athlete who settled for the bronze.

Moses rebounded in style at these championships after suffering difficulties adjusting to his new bench press suit at the Caribbean Championships in the British Virgin Islands earlier this year. No such challenges faced the little Goliath this time around.

Guyana’s third athlete at the championships ‘Big’ John Edwards was expected to compete yesterday afternoon.7th North American Powerlifting Championships

The exciting performances of Morgan and Moses were not limited to the Pan American Championships which are held every two years.

The Guyanese pair also powered their way to gold medals in the same categories at the 7th North American Championships. Morgan again won the 82,5kg category beating a Puerto Rican competitor while Moses achieved a similar feat in the 75kg class when he whipped a Costa Rican.

‘Big’ John Edwards was also expected to lift in this championship yesterday afternoon more details on the exact weights the Guyanese achieved in the three lifts in another edition.
