The ScotiaBank/Pepsi School's Football Academy Program-2012

The ScotiaBank/PEPSI Guyana Schools Football Academy in the second year will have twelve (12) schools in the Georgetown area for children, both male and female from 10 to 15 years old. The program is designed as a development and feeder system for the enhancement of the Guyana National Football teams from U15 to senior levels.

The program will align sports with academics with the ultimate goal of producing well rounded individuals pursuing academic or sports later in life. The program will also place a very strong emphasis on discipline resulting in the reduction of some of the social issues currently experienced in society. Parents will be involved and also students will be recognized in a manner to be role models in their schools and communities.

Scholarship opportunities will be created for students in overseas colleges and universities with current college and club coaches being available for training and seminars to students and local coaches, while at the same time acting as scouts on behalf of their and other academic institutions, or to professional leagues around the world.

The Guyana Sports Development Foundation will liaise with the alumni in the Diaspora to assist with equipment and uniform for the schools.

The ScotiaBank/PEPSI Guyana Schools Football Academy will be run by a committee comprising representatives from the following organizations:-

  • Guyana Ministry of Education
  • Guyana Teachers Union
  • Guyana Football Federation
  • Guyana Ministry of Sports
  • Guyana Sports Development Foundation
  • Guyana Football Referees Council
  • Guyana Private Sector
  • Guyana Media

Teachers from the participating schools will be trained over a one week FIFA recommended Football Coaching Course. Upon completion of the Coaching Course, the teacher will have the responsibility of selecting perspective players to form their school’s male and female football teams. At the same time students who have an interest in becoming referees can be identified to attend a football Referees course, administered by the Guyana Football Referees Council (GRFC).

Following an accelerated two (3) month training program, a league tournament will begin and will run for a two (2) month duration.
