Guyana will be hosting Group D (Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, Dominican Republic, Guyana) of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) U20 Women's World Cup Qualifying, kicking off on Wednesday Nov 2nd.
Women's Technical Director - Mark Rodrigues has assembled his staff and squad and will be arriving in Guyana on Thursday Oct 27 to join Program Director - Colin Baker in assisting the GFF with final arrangements for the tournament. Players will be encamped and start training on Sunday Oct 30th in preparation for their first game against Antigua & Barbuda on Nov 2. All games are scheduled to be played on Nov 2/4/6 with the Lady Jags closing out each evening's double header kicking off at 8pm. Team Guyana's games will also be streamed live on the internet via the Guyana Sports Development website, http://www.guysportsdevelopment.com. Tickets for the games can be purchased at the gates. Venues for all games will be advertised shortly.
TD
Rodrigues is confident that the U20 Lady Jags will continue the success
of the senior team (Gold Cup Finalists 2010) and U17 team (1st round
qualifying winners 2011), while continuing the
current upbeat winning tradition of Guyana football overall. According
to TD Rodrigues - the U20 Lady Jags are not entered to compete, they are
here to win and get to the U20 World Cup finals in 2012.
Toronto
based Lady Jags supporter EXCLUSSIF Spices today showed their continued
support donating another GUY$250,000.00 to the program, bringing the
company's total donation since 2009 to approximately GUY$1,000,000.00.
Company President - Eric Rodrigues and his spouse even flew to Cancun, Mexico in 2010 to support the senior ladies at the Gold Cup.
Program
Director Colin Baker is asking that the general public, private
companies and the government to provide support to the
Lady Jags. "We are finally seeing great sacrifices paying off with
Guyana's football, both male and female. The Golden Jaguars are on the
verge of qualification for the next round of the FIFA 2014 World Cup,
while the female U20 and U17 teams are expected to do much better that
last year when the senior Lady Jags made it to the CONCACAF final. We
are now seeing an interest in Guyana's football worldwide and so we have
to put the necessary things in place in order to be successful when we
get to the next level".
(CFU) U20 Women's World Cup Qualifying for Group B
kicked off last Tuesday Oct 18 in Suriname, with the Cayman Islands
making a statement for their chances of advancing to the next round, by
defeating Suriname by a score of 4-0. Play resumed on Thursday Oct 20
with the Cayman Islands again showing strong against Caribbean
powerhouses Trinidad & Tobago, eventually giving up the game winning
goal in the 93rd minute with the final whistle sounding shortly after.
The final game pitting host Suriname against Trinidad & Tobago is
schedule for a 4:00pm kick off on Saturday Oct 22 at Dr. Franklin Essed
Stadium in Paramaribo. With only three teams in this group and two
qualifying for advancement to the next round, Suriname's chances to go
through are still mathematically possible.
Group A which is also a group of three (Jamaica, Cuba and St. Lucia) kicks off on Sunday Oct 23rd at the Estadio Pedro Marrero in Havana, Cuba, with Group C (Barbados, Haiti, St. Kitts, U.S.Virgin Islands) and Group D (Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, Dominican Republic, Guyana) kicking off on Wednesday Nov 2nd.
